Around the Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome (KNIR)

The KNIR is located in the Villa Giulia neighbourhood that houses a diverse set of international organisations and institutions. In addition, various museums, monuments and parks are located in the vicinity. We listed a selection of these below, which are within a maximum of 20 minutes walking distance from the institute:

  • Villa Borghese (ca. 5 minute walk to reach the north-western part of the park): one of the main public parks of Rome, containing various museums, villas and monuments, including the Museo Galleria Borghese and Museo Carlo Bilotti. Aside from sightseeing, it is a nice location to have a (lunch) picnic;
  • The National Gallery of modern and contemporary art (ca. 5 minute walk): housing one of the largest collections of modern art paintings and sculptures in Italy;
  • The national Etruscan museum of Villa Giulia (ca. 7 minute walk): housed in the historic Villa Giulia (1551-1553), the museum includes an impressive collection of Etruscan artefacts that includes the famous Sarcophagus of the Spouses;
  • Piazza del Popolo (ca. 15 minute walk): constructed in the 19 th century it is one of the main squares of Rome and includes an Egyptian obelisk in its centre and the famous parish basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo in the north-eastern part of the square;
  • The Villa Medici (ca. 17 minute walk): housing the French Academy in Rome as well as art collections of Ferdinando de Medici and the French Academy;
  • The Piazza de Spagna, the Spanish steps and the church of the Santissima Trinità dei Monti (ca. 20 minute walk): one of the most famous squares in Rome that provides access to, amongst other things, the impressive Spanish steps and the Renaissance church Trinità dei Monti.

Rome’s public transport network

Rome has a metro network that includes three metro lines (A, B and C) as well as an elaborate network of public busses. Further information on trains in Italy can be found here: https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html. N.B. do not forget to stamp your public transport tickets before entering the bus, metro or train. Furthermore, due to maintenance of metro line A, this line will be running at limited times: Sunday-Thursday until 9 PM and Friday-Saturday until 1:30 PM. To plan your journeys in Rome, in addition to the very popular Google Map, there is also the Moovit app, which you can install on your smartphone.
